Ninths: The Last Symphonies of Schubert, Beethoven, and Mahler

Ages: 18 + Years

The legend of the “Curse of the Ninth” has fascinated composers and audiences for generations, ever since Beethoven, despite profound hearing loss, composed and conducted his groundbreaking Ninth Symphony—uniting orchestra, chorus, and soloists in a monumental work Brahms described as “giant footsteps tramping behind him.”

In this course, we’ll explore the final symphonies of Beethoven, Schubert, and Mahler—including Mahler’s incomplete Tenth and his playful sidestep with Das Lied von der Erde, presented as a song-symphony rather than his "true" ninth. We’ll listen closely to these masterpieces, uncovering their striking differences and heartfelt connections—each a gem of classical music.

No prior knowledge is required—just a love for classical music! You’ll receive guided readings, listening materials, and optional appreciation activities outside of class. Class size is limited to 25 to ensure a supportive and personalized experience.
