Ninths: The Last Symphonies of Schubert, Beethoven, and Mahler

Ages: 18 + Years

The legend sometimes referred to as "The Curse of the Ninth" has intrigued composers and listeners for generations, ever since the great Beethoven, with his profound hearing loss, composed and conducted his monumental Ninth Symphony. This incredible work, which for the first time combined not only the orchestra and chorus but also soloists, has been described, as Brahms said, as "giant footsteps tramping behind him."

In this course, we will embark on a captivating journey through the last symphonies of Beethoven, Schubert, and Mahler. (We'll also explore how Mahler wrote a tenth symphony, though it wasn't quite finished, and how he playfully led listeners to believe his song-symphony Das Lied von der Erde was truly his ninth.) We will listen closely to these masterpieces, discovering their unique differences and heartwarming similarities. Each one is an undisputed treasure of classical music. The only prerequisite for this enriching experience is a love of classical music! Supportive reading and listening materials will be provided as the course unfolds. To deepen your appreciation, you'll have the opportunity to engage with fun and engaging listening and appreciation exercises/worksheets outside of class.

Class size is limited to 25, ensuring a personalized and supportive learning environment.
