Liza Knight
Evening Front Desk
email: lizak@allnewton.org
Liza Knight is a Boston-based bassoonist, teacher, and administrator looking to extend the expressive potential of music as we know it. Unconventional in more ways than one, she seeks out all of the aspects of musical performance that speak the most to the modern human being.
Hailing from Ann Arbor, Michigan, a place known by many as “tree city,” the work she produces has a recurring theme of nature, often portraying a narrative that speaks to nostalgia and strange associations. She is dedicated to facilitating a community of listeners who have open minds and open ears, who are willing to savor every sound- even those unfamiliar and uncomfortable.
As an openly-lesbian artist, Liza seeks out collaboration with other members of the LGBTQ+ community in every way possible, from commissioning composers to pushing for inclusive programming. In addition to performing regularly with Du Bois Orchestra, she has participated in several reputable projects such as John Luther Adams’ official recording of his piece Sila: The Breath of the World, which was considered for five Grammy nominations and ultimately nominated for Best Orchestral Performance.
Liza is a graduate of the University of Michigan where she received a bachelor’s degree in bassoon performance under Dr. Jeffrey Lyman, and she received a master’s degree from the Longy School of Music of Bard College where she studied with Rachael Elliott.
